Bass vs. Railing

We've all done it.  Whacked your bass into a table, railing or door.  This fantastic old Bohemian bass with it's share of bumps and scratches took a good hit to the upper treble side rib, and lost.

After taking off the top, it was evident that not enough rib fragments survived to piece it back together.  After some shop deliberation, we decided the best course of action was to do a "through patch".

After carefully selecting a piece of aged maple that would perfectly match the surrounding wood, the slow process of chalk fitting it into place began.

After some touchup, we had to point out the repair to the owner.

Before - so sad... Chalk fitting begins... Almost done...it takes SOOOO long... Glued & Clamped Trimmed flush... Closer view...Leveled out, ready for touchup... Touchup complete... Like it almost never even happened!
