E.M. Pollmann, Mittenwald
Made for Will deSola, 2000
This Pollmann double bass is as nice on the inside as it is on
the outside. Nice linings, blocks, wood choice, etc.
A mild bump on the ribs and a crack shot along a winter grain.
A few shops offered different opinions on how to repair it, from opening just a
bout and prying the top open enough to get a clamp in there to drilling holes
through the ribs to affix cleats with piano wire. We cannot imagine
telling a customer that we suggest drilling holes in basses to fix cracks!!!
Top off...this is the only way to do it right. Does it
cost more? Sure...to do things the right way it normally does. This bass
is worth the extra attention. Our shop charges a flat rate for the top
off. This flat rate allows us the freedom to take care of any doubling or
cracks that may be needed without calling the customer to let them know things
will cost more money than originally quoted.
Portions of the top had come open before...and it looks like
Gorilla glue was the adhesive of choice. It was also apparent that ill
fitting sound posts that were way too tight had been living inside for some
time. Some hot water allowed for a bit of swelling to puff them back
out...but inevitably the bass will need a sound post patch in the future.
Spruce diamond cleats were decided upon as the strength to
weight ratio is superb and the stability of the crack once glued was strong.
Had the rib undergone more significant damage, a larger Maple patch would have
been employed.

Unfortunately the bass was picked up by the very eager owner prior to having the
opportunity to shoot full finished portraits under the lights and white
background like so many of the basses on our other pages. Sorry! |
